Remote access to images on PC running Surveillance System via LAN TCP/IP.

Each channel can be configured with its own Continuous and/or Event Recording Schedule, Sensitivity, Masking/Detection Areas, Audible Alarm sound file, Dial-Out parameters.

Masking allows user to define Detection Areas where image changes will be detected, multiple detection areas may be defined anywhere on image, individually configurable for each channel.

Recordings may be stored on one or more Hard Disk Drive(s).

Recyclable data storage, system automatically overwrites oldest files to avoid loss of current surveillance recordings, user configurable value to overwrite files when disk space is below a certain value and user configurable deleted block size, eliminates the need to regularly review and delete recordings.

During Playback any image may be saved as a BMP file then edited (Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness, Cut Paste, etc) with a Graphics application and converted to other file formats such as JPEG to reduce file size.

During Playback any image may be selected and printed.

AVI Video Clips, BMP and JPEG files may be easily copied and archived to Floppy Disc, CD ROM, DVD, removable Tape or HDD, etc.

AVI Video Clips, BMP and JPEG files may be easily and quickly distributed via e-mail or LAN for viewing by Police, Security Personnel, etc.

Compared to a conventional 4 Channel Quad / VCR recording systems that is susceptible to fluctuating results depending on condition of Tape, VCR Heads and Transport mechanism.

PC-DVR: 320 (H) x 240 (V) per camera = 76 800 pixels.

Quad & VHS Time-Lapse VCR: Field Recording ~ 160 x ~ 144 per camera = 23 040 pixels, 70% less data. (VHS VCR resolution ~ 320 horizontal pixels x 288 scan lines)

Video Cameras:
Up to 8 'per Card' with standard 75 ohm impedance composite video output, CCIR or EIA monochrome or PAL or NTSC colour. Reliable recording is usually not possible with a mix of monochrome & colour cameras, with multiple Cards it may be possible to use monochrome cameras on one card and colour on another.

STORAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Hard Disk requirements are impossible to accurately specify due to the numerous variables involved, these variables include: Image Compression - Capture Rate (Images-per-Second) - PC Speed/Performance - Image Content:- A solitary person moving about (only a portion of image changing) - VERSUS - Numerous persons and/or vehicles moving about (large portions of image changing).

As a guide following information is from a related PC-DVR-X4E8 (4 channel) system consisting of: XP Professional OS, Intel D850GB Motherboard, Pentium 1.7 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM, NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 (32 MB) VGA Card & 10 GB ATA 66 HDD.

Program settings were: Compression = Minimum (Best Image Quality), Capture Rate = ~ 10 ips per channel, Recording Mode = Continuous, Signal Source = Off-Air PAL Television, Channels = 4.

Files are written to the HDD in 5 minute blocks, files ranged in size from 96 MB to 265 MB (total 40 images per second).

These file sizes are larger than likely to be encountered in a typical CCTV Surveillance situation, the Off-Air TV Source provided 4 images that were constantly changing often in their entirety, rather than just sections of some images on some channels as would be encountered in most typical surveillance situations.

Based on above file sizes around 70 hours of storage is possible with a single 80 GB HDD that costs around $169 (@ 2/05/03).

A single 80 GB HDD can store 10 + MILLION IMAGES - A Time Lapse VCR in 24 hour mode with 3 hour tape stores only 540 000 images.

PC DVR: (40 images per second) x (3 600 seconds) x (70 hours) = 10 080 000 images. VHS VCR: (5.5 fields per second) x (3 600 seconds) x (27.2 hours) = 540 000 fields.

Storage could be extended to WEEKS or MONTHS with Larger &/or multiple Hard Disk Drives, &/or reduced Capture Rate, &/or greater Image Compression, &/or Event recording.

There is no direct relationship between the number of images and file size, this is variable and depends on image to image changes, this data from our test platform is presented as a guide only, actual results in each situation will vary considerably due to the numerous variables involved.
